It happens to everyone: something trips a breaker, the lights start flickering, or you start smelling suspicious burning smells from your walls and you need to call an electrician. But if you’ve never had to do that before, what are the steps you need to take beforehand? What should you expect? For your convenience, we’ve compiled some of the most important considerations when scheduling an electrical inspection.

How to Prepare for a Visit from an Electrician

  • Know where your electrical panel is. It is likely that, if your electrician is here to do something with your wiring, he may have to turn off your electricity. There is a good chance we will be able to find it ourselves, but it will save you and everyone valuable time if you can show us to your electrical panel yourself.
  • Make plans for your pets. If your pets are likely to be distressed by a stranger in the house, try to arrange to have them kept in another part of the house, or, in extreme cases, out of the house entirely.
  • Clean up. If you know where your electrician is going to be working, it’s wise to clear away any furniture, toys, or papers that might be in the way. This can help make the electrical work quicker and easier. It’s also important to make sure there is nothing blocking your electrical panel.
