To explain how we identify problems with pool electrical wiring, we’ll use a pool light that’s out as an example. The problem could simply be that the bulb is burnt out, but there could also be an issue with the wiring. To determine the exact cause of the problem, our most likely first step would be to check the continuity of the bulb, which we do by disconnecting the bulb’s wires and attaching a continuity tester. This determines both if the bulb is working, and if current is actually reaching the bulb. Another thing we’re likely to do is reset the breakers and ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) and turn on the switch to see if the right voltage is reaching the wires that connect to the light. Once we have these preliminary results, we’ll move on to more direct tests of the problem areas, such as pulling the light out of the wall or examining the GFCI or its wiring if the initial tests pointed in that direction.
